You will rarely find me in a seat on an airplane that isn't perfectly aligned with a window. No matter how many books, projects, movies, etc. I have at my disposal, I cannot help but lean my head against the side of the aircraft and gaze at the land below. I wonder - What state is that? What's that lake? Who lives here?
Luckily for me (any you), there's an app for that! Flyover Country is a mobile app for geoscience that enables us to view the world from our window seats. Here it is explained in their words:
Flyover Country® is a National Science Foundation funded offline mobile app for geoscience outreach and data discovery. Learn about the world along the path of your flight, hike, or road trip with GPS tracking. Offline geologic maps and interactive points of interest reveal the locations of fossils and georeferenced Wikipedia articles visible from your airplane window seat, vehicle, or hiking trail vista.
I've loved learning about what's 20,000 feet below me when I travel. Before your next trip, do yourself a favor and download Flyover Country to explore beyond the window seat.
Here are some of my favorite views from 20,000 feet.
